Canadians have responded generously to the plight of a family that escaped war-torn Syria, only to experience tragedy in British Columbia.

Hala Albarhoum 9, was killed on December 1 after being hit by a bus on her way to school in Abbotsford.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help the girl's family.

The target is currently $20,000 and as of this writing, $23,141 has been pledged.

The man who created it, Adnan Bhat, helped the Albarhoums settle in Canada and knows them well.

The money is being managed by Bhat in collaboration with the Abbotsford Islamic Center.

The family has two other children.

"The funds will be used to support the basic needs of the family, such as transportation, grocery, education of the 2 kids," Bhat wrote on the GoFundMe page. "They will also be used to help the family survive any period of unemployment Hala's father goes through as he has struggled to find a stable job."
