Last winter, a shortage of road salt and icy side streets created an uproar in Vancouver.

But during this pre-Christmas cold snap, the City of Vancouver is conveying a message that things are under conrol.

"In anticipation for freezing weather and possible flurries this evening and tonight, the City is preparing to work overnight to continue salting and plowing major roadways," says the latest bulletin from city hall.

This includes full fleet salting and plowing, as well as redeploying crews from water and sewer operations to support snow removal on sidewalks and at bus stops.

Meanwhile, bylaw-enforcement staff are issuing warnings to those who haven't removed snow from the pavement in front of their buildings.

"All property owners and occupants must clear snow and ice from sidewalks around their property by 10 a.m. the morning after a snowfall, seven days a week," the city warns. "Failure to remove snow and ice may result in fines."
