Littleton has a population less than 50,000 and it's in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area.
The notorious Columbine High School massacre in 1999 occurred approximately 1.5 kilometres west of Littleton's city limit.
Filmmaker Michael Moore's incendiary 2002 documentary, Bowling for Columbine, explored U.S. gun culture. It also raised questions about the impact that a Lockheed Martin plant had on the local mindset in Littleton and whether this contributed to violence in the area.
After the movie was released, Lockheed Martin declared that its plant created rockets for launching satellites, but that it had stopped producing parts for intercontinental ballistic missiles in the 1980s.
