The greatest female soccer player in Canadian history appears to have been taken by surprise by her coach's decision to switch to the men's team.

Christine Sinclair tweeted that she was "speechless right now" after hearing that John Herdman was no longer going to be coaching the highly successful Canadian national women's squad.

Under Herdman's leadership and with Sinclair scoring goals like virtually no one else on the planet, it reached fifth in the world rankings.

The women also won two Olympic bronze medals.

The national men's team, however, hasn't fared nearly as well.

It has only qualified for the FIFA World Cup competition once. That was way back in 1986 when Vancouver Whitecaps boss Bob Lenarduzzi was still playing.

Its last Olympic appearance was in 1984.

John Herdman has done something unheard of: switching from coaching the national women's team to coaching the national men's team.

Not surprisingly, Herdman's appointment to coach the men hasn't thrilled some fans of the women's team.
