Expect more downpours across the Lower Mainland today.

That's the message in a federal government weather alert issued this morning for Metro Vancouver.

As of 4:15 a.m., there had already been 70 millimetres of rain over Howe Sound since Sunday morning, as well as 40 millimetres over Metro Vancouver, and 30 millimetres over the Fraser Valley.

The heaviest precipitation was over the eastern part of Vancouver Island, which endured 70 to 100 millimetres since Sunday morning.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," Environment Canada warns. "Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."
