A 52-year-old Nanaimo man has not survived after falling 250 feet from a cornice that collapsed.

According to Whistler RCMP, the fatality occurred near Callaghan Lake Provincial Park in Whistler around 3:15 p.m. on February 10.

Other snowmobilers tried to help by digging him out of the snow and performing CPR but he died at the scene.

      No names have been released.

At the time of the tragedy, there was a "moderate" warning in place from Avalanche Canada, which has also recommended giving cornices an extra wide berth.

Earlier today, Avalanche Canada issued a "special public avalanche warning" for backcountry users over a large swath of eastern B.C. and Alberta from Kootenay-Boundary through the South and North Columbia, the eastern Cariboo, and the North Rockies.
