Canada and U.S. to meet in “greatest rivalry in sports”

While the men’s hockey tournament at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea has gone off the rails a little bit in the absence of NHLers, the women’s side of the competition has been predictably excellent as usual.

Also predictable is the fact that Team Canada and the U.S. will battle for the gold medal once again. It’s the third straight time the two have met in the final, with Team Canada taking both the previous matches. The Canadians are gunning for a fifth Olympic gold in women’s hockey.

Standing in their way, though, are the Americans, who gave Canada a serious scare in the round robin, outshooting them 45-23. Team Canada’s women’s squad has won 24 straight Olympic games, but if anyone is going to end the streak, it’s the powerhouse Americans, who are still nursing a heartbreaking overtime loss to Canada during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

"I am biased, but I think it is the greatest rivalry in sport when you look at the history of how many gold medal games the two teams have played in”, said U.S. forward Meghan Duggan to the CBC.

Although the Canadian team lists no players from B.C., forward Meghan Agosta doubles as a Vancouver police officer.

It’s clear that the contest will be much more dramatic and enthralling than anything the men’s hockey team has to offer this year.

The game airs on the CBC tonight at 8:10 p.m. PST. You can catch it online here
