Plaza of Nations redevelopment begins to move forward

Today (April 4) Vancouver’s urban design panel received a proposal for the redevelopment of a prime piece of the city’s waterfront.

For years, Plaza of Nations at 750 Pacific Boulevard hasn’t had a lot going on there despite its beautiful location on the north edge of False Creek. Now the property’s owner, Canadian Metropolitan Properties, is moving on plans for a big redevelopment.

According to the urban design panel’s agenda, the plan is to “develop the 10.28 acre site with a mixed-use development consisting of a variety of terracing buildings of up to 30 storeys with commercial and residential uses, social housing, civic facilities (community centre, ice rink, music presentation centre and childcare), and a new public plaza and seawall.”

James KM Cheng Architects has been hired to handle design work.

Documents submitted to the city has part of the project’s development-permit application depict tapered buildings reminiscent of the work of the late Vancouver architect Arthur Erickson.

The city recently released a draft of its plans for a post-viaducts Northeast False Creek.

If approved (which is likely), the redevelopment will become part of the city’s Northeast False Creek Plan, a massive plan to plan to build up an entire new section of Vancouver’s downtown core.
