A dramatic police takedown of two suspects in a car on Granville Street enlivened the lunch break for local residents and shopping-district workers minutes ago.

According to Georgia Straight staffer Tamara Robinson—who was in a shoe shop in the 2900-block of Granville, between 13th and 14th avenues—she heard a commotion outside the store at about 12:45 p.m.

It turned out to be a team of police in marked and unmarked cars, including at least one dog-squad vehicle, who had boxed in a white pickup truck with two male passengers. "The dogs were barking and the cops were yelling," Robinson recounted.

"They had their service revolvers drawn, at least two of them," she noted, adding that she saw "at least five of them [police officers] in the street".

The two passengers ("in their late 20s or early 30s") got out of the vehicle with hands raised and were quickly handcuffed with no resistance, said Robinson, who, although she said the event was "scary", still managed to take a few phone pictures.

Police boxed in suspects' vehicle (the roof of which is just visible over police-car lights on left).

A message left with the Vancouver Police Department had not been returned at the time of posting.

      * Update: In a call to the Straight at approximately 2:45 p.m., Const. Anne-Marie Clark of the VPD public-affairs section said: "It looks like it may have been a shoplifting call, with a possible stolen vehicle."

Clark said there was no other information available at the time, including whether or not any charges have been laid.
