Watch a car get engulfed by molten lava

As Kilauea volcano continues to erupt on the big Island of Hawaii, the town of Pahoa has become increasingly threatened by flowing lava. In the Leilani Estates subdivision, at least 31 homes and buildings have been destroyed and 1700 people have been evacuated. So far, there has been no loss of human life.

Kilauea’s flowing lava can reach temperatures of 800-1000 degrees centigrade, keeping firefighters and emergency crews at bay and forcing them to simply cordon off the area and let nature take its course.

Along with slowly-moving lava flows, there are also at least ten fissures in the Leilani Estates area, from which pressurized molten lava has sprayed more 60 metres in the air.
