A double-shooting took place in East Vancouver this morning that resulted in the death of an unborn child.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) stated that shortly before 6 a.m. today (May 18), an unidentified suspect entered an apartment on Industrial Avenue near Scotia Street and shot a 31-year-old woman. The area is an industrial district and the apartment was located above a commercial venue.

Const. Jason Doucette stated, at a VPD press conference held today, that the woman was in the third trimester of her pregnancy.

"Unfortunately, the unborn child did not survive," he said.

After the suspect left, the victim called 911.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they found a 23-year-old man from Langley had also been shot at the same apartment as well.

The female victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, while the male victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

VPD Const. Jason Doucette stated in a news release that preliminary information suggests that it was a targeted shooting, though one that appears unrelated to any gang conflicts.

No arrests have been made yet.

The VPD Major Crime Section is asking anyone who has information about this shooting or was in the area at the time, to contact them at 604-717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
