Donald Trump claims that his administration has "ended the war on coal"

Even by Donald Trump's standards, it was an astonishing statement.

"America is blessed with extaordinary energy abundance, including more than 250 years worth of beautiful clean coal," the U.S. president tweeted yesterday.

Then he added: "We have ended the war on coal, and will continue to work to promote American energy dominance!"

Incredible. The man who presides over the world's largest economy appears to be utterly ignorant about the world's carbon budget.

For anyone interested in learning about the Global Carbon Budget, I recommend this website.

West Coast Environmental Law staff lawyer Andrew Gage prepared a carbon budget for Canada, which was written in 2015.

Gage noted in his report that carbon budgets set "an amount of greenhouse gases that can be emitted over a particular time while still achieving a target".

This approach has put the United Kingdom on track to reduce emissions by 35 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.

"By contrast," Gage wrote back in 2015, "Canada's current national target is a 2% increase over 1990 levels by 2020, and we are not expected to achieve it."
