Update: TransLink has put a "pause" on its Morgan Freeman–voiced transit announcements following allegations of sexual misconduct against the actor. Read the full story here.

As part of TransLink’s “tap to pay” rollout, Academy Award–winning actor Morgan Freeman will voice transit announcements on Metro Vancouver’s SkyTrain and select bus routes this summer.

Freeman’s deep, commanding baritone, which has been employed in countless television series, ads, and films—including the 2003 comedy Bruce Almighty, in which he played none other than God—will be heard across the region’s SkyTrain system and on six yet-to-be-revealed bus routes from June 4 to July 29.

Commuters will catch recorded announcements from the star, informing them that they may now tap their Visa cards at fare gates to “go anywhere TransLink takes you”. Freeman will also share fun facts about Vancouver (“Did you know that Stanley Park is over three times bigger than Central Park?”) and reminders about basic public-transportation etiquette (“Remember what your mom used to say: Please keep your feet off the furniture.”)

In addition, Freeman’s distinctive speech will be heard on public transit following B.C. Lions home games on June 8, June 16, and July 14.

The star-powered announcements are the result of a collaboration between TransLink and Visa that promotes the regional transit authority’s new tap-to-pay function, which allows commuters to pay with credit cards and mobile wallets at fare gates and on buses.

TransLink says that, thanks to the partnership, they did not pay for the use of Freeman’s silky baritone. The 80-year-old actor-producer is a longtime spokesperson for Visa and has narrated a large number of the company’s ads and marketing campaigns over the years.
