The case of two men who went missing on Vancouver Island in May is now being treated as suspicious by investigators.

The two men, 37-year-old Daniel Archibald and 43-year-old Ryan Daley, had docked a sailboat at Ucluelet Small Craft Harbour on May 13 and were last seen leaving the harbour by foot on May 16.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Madonna Saunderson told the Georgia Straight that the pair were reported missing on May 16 after they failed to contact any family or friends.

Although a Facebook webpage created for the search for the men suggested that they may have been attempting to hitchhike, Cpl. Saunderson said that they have not received any confirmation yet that they had done so.

Ucluelet RCMP launched search efforts involving a local search and rescue team and an aerial search, and Cpl. Saunderson said they also checked various forms of public transportation but all efforts to locate the men were unsuccessful.

Ryan Daley and Daniel Archbald were last seen in Ucluelet on May 16.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has taken over the case.

RCMP are asking anyone who may have seen or spoken with the two men between May 13 to 16 to contact police immediately by calling VIIMCU at 250-380-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Archbald, from Squamish, is a 37-year-old male with short strawberry blond hair and facial stubble. He has an average build, and was last seen wearing a grey fleece longsleeve top, green pants, and flip flops while carrying a large bag.

Daley is a 43-year-old male with short dark hair who was last seen sporting a grey ballcap with a black logo, a white t-shirt, dark pants (possibly jeans), and shoes, and was carrying a yellow or green backpack along with a large white duffel bag with black accents.

Cpl. Saunderson stated in a news release that there is "no evidence to suggest that this case is linked to any other missing person investigation at this time".

Their disappearance coincided with another man going missing on the east side of Vancouver Island under suspicious circumstances on the same day.

The van of a 41-year-old electrician from Cobble Hill, Benjamin John Kilmer, was found abandoned on Cowichan Lake Road near Duncan on May 16. A small amount of blood and his personal items were found in the van.

Kilmer is described as five-feet, seven-inches tall; weighs 205 pounds; has short brown hair and blue eyes; is clean shaven; and was last seen wearing light-coloured pants, a black shirt, and steel-toed work boots.

Although an official search for Kilmer has been suspended, family and friends have continued efforts and a Facebook page has been set up for the search.

Anyone with information about Kilmer's whereabouts is asked to call the North Cowichan and Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
