Brock Boeser, Roberto Luongo up for NHL Fan Choice Awards

With the end of the NHL season marked by the Washington Capitals finally winning the franchise’s first Stanley Cup, it’s now time for the NHL to dole out its annual awards.

An addition to those traditional trophies slated to be given out on June 20 are the NHL Fan Choice Awards, given to the league’s best in a plethora of social media categories.

Vancouver Canucks fans will recognize at least two names on the list, as super rookie Brock Boeser and his flowing locks are up for best-dressed player, while former goaltender Roberto Luongo is up for best chirper.

Boeser looks to be in tough, currently holding third place in his category, and 10,000 votes behind Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin. The lone player Boeser is ahead of? Off-season rumour darling Noah Hanifin, who has been linked to the Canucks more than once since the season ended.

There’s probably no way Boeser catches Seguin, but he may be able to unseat veteran James Neal of the freshly defeated Vegas Golden Knights. As of writing, Neal was only about a hundred votes up on the rookie.

Luongo is faring well in his category, but will still be hard-pressed to take home the, um, trophy (we’re not sure there is one).

The Florida Panthers netminder chose a different route than the other nominees for best chirper, throwing shade at himself.

Alas, a strong dose of humility might not be enough for Lu to take the honours. Currently in second place, fans of the goalie’s particular brand of humour have their work cut out for them, as he trails Canuck nemesis Brad Marchand by 15,000 votes.

Marchand poked fun at teammate David Backes back in February.

But Canucks fans are likely more inclined to remember this chirp he threw at them after many were upset when he tried to wish the Sedins well in retirement.

Voting for the awards ends at midnight.
