Wayne Rooney was always going to be the story of the Vancouver Whitecaps' Saturday night contest against D.C. United.

The former captain of Team England became the latest international star to take his talents to Major League Soccer, signing a reported US $16.3 million deal with D.C. United last month.

On Saturday the 32-year-old debuted against the Vancouver Whitecaps, coming on at the 58th minute in front of the faithful at the Audi Stadium in Washington, D.C. It was already 1-0 for the home side when Rooney took the field as a substitute. He wasted little time setting up two goals.

As usual, the story for the Whitecaps was teenage sensation Alphonso Davies, who scored on an astounding individual effort in injury time.

The loss hurts for the Whitecaps who are battling for a playoff spot and badly needed a win against a United team near the bottom of league standings.
