Veteran quarterback Travis Lulay showed that he's still a sharp CFL passer in his first start of the season.

Last night, the 34-year-old pivot led the B.C. Lions to a thrilling 20-17 victory by throwing for 326 yards.

The Leos' won on the final play of the game with Ty Long's 16-yard field goal in front of an ecstatic hometown crowd at B.C. Place Stadium.

Lulay completed 28 of 41 passes as the Leos came roaring back from a 17-0 first-half deficit.

The game was tied late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass to Shaq Johnson, who eluded three Bomber defenders to leap into the end zone.

Lulay was assisted by an outstanding defence, which shut down the Bombers' offence in the second half and created five turnovers.

An interception by Anthony Orange with 1:39 left in the fourth quarter created the opening for the Lions' victory.

That became more likely when Bryan Burnham caught a pass deep in Bombers territory.

Last year, the likable Lulay's season ended with a knee injury against Montreal, and the previous year, he was the backup quarterback, being brought in for short-yard rushing situations.

"The guy worked hard as he always has," coach Wally Buono said in his post-game news conference. "He’s always well prepared and he ran the offence very efficiently.”

Lulay, however, said that the team could have put points on the board in the first half had it executed better. He blamed himself for his only interception, a first-quarter long bomb that was picked off by Bombers defensive back Kevin Fogg in the end zone.

The win puts the Lions at 2-2-0 on the season. Their next game is on the road on Friday (July 20) against the Ottawa Redblacks.
