Burnaby RCMP announced today (July 17) that a man has been arrested after alleged voyeurism at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

At 12:20 p.m. on July 16, RCMP received reports about a male being held down by students at BCIT's Burnaby campus.

The male had been allegedly caught using a cellphone to take pictures of a female while she was using a campus washroom in the NE1 building.

When the female victim confronted the man, he pushed the victim as he attempted to flee.

Other students moved in to detain him until police could arrive. Officers took him into custody without incident.

RCMP is working with BCIT in this investigation and a 48-year-old man from Langley will face charges of voyeurism and assault.

CBC News reported that BCIT issued a notification on July 16 to staff and students about the incident and increased security patrols in the building as a precaution.

The school had previously faced criticism for its handling of a previous case of voyeurism, in which the school did not inform students about the incident until several months later. BCIT president Kathy Kinloch issued a statement to students about the incident in February 2016.

In that case, Chieh-Sen Yang was arrested in 2015 and pled guilty to two counts of voyeurism in 2016 after allegedly videotaping men who were using washrooms on BCIT's Burnaby campus.
