Sensational performance by Alphonso Davies propels Vancouver Whitecaps to big win

The Alphonso Davies Farewell Tour is well underway, and the teenage superstar seems intent on giving fans a show.

In a game the Whitecaps desperately needed in order to stay in the Western Conference playoff race, the 17-year-old scored twice and added two assists in a 4-2 win over Minnesota United FC last night.

Davies began the sequence that led to Vancouver’s first goal, dribbling the ball into Minnesota territory before handing it off to Yordy Reyna, who made a few swift moves and finished with a beautiful strike.

Then, in the second half, Davies really took over.

First, he grabbed a Minnesota turnover and absolutely walked through opposing defenders before finishing cleanly.

Eight minutes later, Davies and Kei Kamara took advantage of some lax defence, combining on a two-on-one break to make the score 3-0.

And finally, after Minnesota scored two goals to threaten Vancouver’s lead, Davies iced the game with another ridiculous set of moves.

The phenom also drew two yellow cards from Minnesota defenders who were apparently upset in their inability to keep up with him.

The best part of those sequences? Many other players would have tried to dramatize the fouls, but Davies played hard and drew them admirably; no diving required.

Hilariously, Reyna won the Whitecaps’ Man of the Match award—Budweiser sponsors the honour, and the 17-year-old Davies isn’t legally old enough to win it.

The Whitecaps were able to leap Minnesota in the standings after the win and now sit in seventh place in the conference.

The top six teams in each conference make the playoffs so the Caps still have some work to do in order to claim a postseason spot. But things certainly look a lot brighter for the club than they did before this weekend.

With possibly the best player in Major League Soccer, the Whitecaps should be fun to watch as they make a run for the promised land. The team looks to be one of the hotter tickets in town down the stretch.
