Every year, the Vancovuer Whitecaps host a Pride Night, usually in accordance or close in date to the city’s Pride Parade. While the parade takes place today, the Whitecaps celebrated Vancouver’s LGBTQ2+ community last week against the Minnesota United.

While the ‘Caps ended up winning that contest, it didn’t come without some controversy.

One of the team’s largest supporters groups, the Vancouver Southsiders, issued a statement after the contest accusing Whitecaps captain and Costa Rica national player Kendall Waston of refusing to celebrate Pride Night.

In a letter posted on the group’s Facebook page, the Southsiders said it “became apparent that the rainbow captain’s armband was intentionally concealed under the sleeve of Kendall Waston’s jersey. He also failed to wear the rainbow scarf in the Starting XI photo with his teammates during the Pride match in 2016.”

The Whitecaps have been holding Pride Night games for several years. The club had yet to comment on the Southsiders’ post.
