A popular recreation area near Harrison Hot Springs has been declared off-limits, as of noon today.

That's because a 100-hectare wildfire near Highway 7 is coming close to Sasquatch Provincial Park.

The B.C. government says campers and other park visitors are being evacuated this morning.

Those with reservations will receive refunds.

The 1,217-hectare Sasquatch Provincial Park has several small lakes, scenic views from mountain ridges, and hiking and picnic areas.

It was created in 1959 as Green Point Park. In 1968, it was renamed as Sasquatch Park after lands including Trout, Hicks, and Deer lakes were added.

Legend has it that the bipedal and very hairy sasquatch, a.k.a. bigfoot, has allegedly lived in the area.
