A man who attacked several people on a bridge in New Westminster has been arrested.
Around 12:30 p.m. on September 23, the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) received a report of an assault in progress on the Queensborough Bridge.
An adult male had allegedly assaulted an elderly man with a hammer and when two bystanders attempted to intervene, they became targets of the attacker.
Upon arrival, officers found the suspect with the hammer in hand. However, when police instructed him to drop the hammer, he ignored them and instead began attacking one of the victims again.
Officers then used the Arwen less-lethal distance launcher on him. But since the suspect continued his attack on a victim, officers used a taser that allowed them to move in and take the suspect into custody.
According to Sgt. Jeff Scott, one of the three victims suffered significant injury, but all three victims required medical attention. They were all taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Sgt. Scott stated that the suspect and victims were not known to each other and it is believed to be random.
Sgt. Scott told the Georgia Straight that 28 year old New Westminster resident Lieto Nasitwitwi has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and assault. Nasitwitwi was known to police.
The investigation is continuing and the suspect remains in custody.
