Families with young children may want to check out a new housing project in Strathcona.

The proposed East Vancouver development is offering 84 percent of its housing units as three-bedroom and two-bedroom accommodations.

Out of the total 37 housing units in the project, 30 will have three bedrooms, and one with two bedrooms.

“Families are key to a growing and vibrant economy and sustainable society,” according to Ekistics Architecture, which filed an application with the city to rezone the location at 1102-1138 East Georgia Street.

“Ensuring adequate housing choice is important to attract and retain families in Vancouver,” the architectural firm continued in the rezoning rationale it submitted as part of the application.

Twenty percent of the housing units will be social housing.

Residents will share a courtyard and children’s play area.

The site at the southeast corner of East Georgia Street and Glen Drive is across Lord Seymour elementary school, whose history goes back to 1900.

The location, according to the application, will enable “families with children to live close to work and school so they can walk, bike and take transit”.

The property is currently zoned as light industrial. It is occupied by a single-storey commercial building.

The proposed development is a four-storey mixed-use building.

The ground floor will feature retail and production spaces for artists.
