Rosellen Suites at Stanley Park in Vancouver has a claim to its share of Hollywood fame.

The late actor Katharine Hepburn is said to have been a regular visitor, staying for long periods of time at the West End establishment.

According to accounts, Hepburn had a liking for the penthouse suite, which today carries her name.

On the hotel’s website, the Rosellen Suites at Stanley Park boasts that the Katharine Hepburn penthouse suite is “one of Vancouver’s best-kept secrets”.

“Frequented by Katharine Hepburn during her many extended visits to the city, the recently redesigned 1,900-sq.ft. suite is still popular among film crews and the fashion industry,” according to the hotel. “The massive 1,700 sq.ft. wraparound deck offers the same mountain and park views Katharine once loved, and the décor captures the splendor of Hollywood’s Golden Age.”

All of these may all soon be a memory.

Marcon Development Ltd. has filed an application with the City of Vancouver to redevelop the hotel’s location at 2030 Barclay Street.

The company wants to construct a 10-storey condo building. It will have 19 condo units.

“Inspired by most of the buildings in the West End, the proposed architecture is unabashedly modern, but residential scaled windows and warm textured materials, including masonry, gives the appropriate character for this area of the city,” according to the application’s design rationale.

The project is oriented for families, with unit sizes projected to be in the range of 2,000 square feet. The units will have “2 bedrooms and a den typically, with private outdoor spaces”.

The proposed condo project will be reviewed by the city's urban design panel at a meeting on Wednesday (October 3).
