When will Vancouver Canucks fans see Olli Juolevi?

Last night, as the Vancouver Canucks dealt with more casualties than the Titanic’s maiden voyage, one wondered which of the team’s prospects would be called up from the farm team in Utica.

Alexander Edler and Chris Tanev were both injured during Vancouver’s 3-2 shootout win over the Vegas Golden Knights (as was forward Sven Baertschi).

To replace the two defencemen, the Canucks called up Alex Biega and Guillaume Brisebois as replacements for tonight's game against Arizona. The pair don’t exactly inspire a ton of excitement.

Biega is well-known to Canucks fans, as up until recently he served as one of the team’s extra defencemen on the active roster, getting into several contests last season. It was somewhat of a no-brainer that he would get one of the call-ups to the big club as he was only dropped down earlier this season.

But the Brisebois recall is a little bit of a question mark.

Though Canucks’ management has often touted Brisebois when given the chance, so far the third-round pick in the 2015 draft looks like he could be a spare part at the NHL level, at best.

In 68 games with Utica last year, he scored three goals and notched 15 assists. This season, he’s got two points in seven games played.

Meanwhile, Juolevi, who the Canucks hope to deploy on the left-side of the defence for many years to come, is hitting his stride with Utica. The Finn has six points in nine games played, and though that comes with a minus-8 rating, one has to think that he’d be a more exciting addition to the lineup than Brisebois or Biega.

The Canucks have a plan in place for Juolevi, that much is clear. But what will it take to bring him up to the roster if this isn’t it?

Hopefully, Canucks fans don’t have to wait too long to see Juolevi take the ice, as they’d surely rather watch him play than 80 percent of the rearguards currently on the roster.
