One of the most iconic figures from the world of comic-book publishing has died. Stan Lee passed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, on November 12, 2018. The cause of death has not been released. Lee was 95.

Born Stanley Martin Lieber in Manhattan on December 28, 1922, Lee was the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, later becoming the company's publisher and chairman. Under Lee's guidance, Marvel expanded from a small division of a publishing house into a large multimedia corporation.

Lee was also a creative force at Marvel, especially during the so-called Silver Age of the 1960s, when the company revolutionized superhero comics by appealling to a readership beyond the children previously associated with the genre. Characters Lee co-created included Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, and Ant-Man.

Lee's was a well-known face to millions of movie-goers; he made cameo appearances in dozens of movies and TV shows based on Marvel characters, including this year's Black Panther, Venom, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Back in August, it was announced that Lee would no longer be attending conventions or autograph signings, which essentially meant he was retiring from public life. The preceding year or so had been a difficult one for Lee. In July of 2017, his wife of 69 years, Joan Lee, had died. This past January, in the wake of the #MeToo movement, several women working for a nursing company that he had previously employed accused Lee of sexual misconduct. Lee's attorney not only refuted the accusations, but said that the women had attempted to blackmail Lee and only went to the media when he refused to give them money. Not long after, it came to light that one of Lee's caregivers had taken US$850,000 of his money and bought a condominium with it. In February, Lee told the LAPD that someone had stolen US$1.4 million from his bank account. Also that month, according to a Hollywood Reporter article, Lee signed "a blistering declaration" alleging a number of instances of elder abuse on the part of his daughter and other close associates and caregivers.

Those recent troubles aside, Lee led an amazing life and his impact on pop culture has been immeasurable and will continue to be felt for years to come.

Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said of Lee, “Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created.  A super hero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain, and to connect.  The scale of his imagination was only exceeded by the size of his heart."
