City of Vancouver opens warming centres downtown and on East Side

      With the temperature expected to fall below -5 °C tonight, four warming centres will welcome the homeless in B.C.'s largest city.

      The Powell Street Getaway (528 Powell Street) in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside will be open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday (December 3 and 4).

      The Britannia Community Centre (1739 Venables Street) on the East Side will be open from 10 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. tonight. Tomorrow night, it will open at 9 p.m.

      The Vancouver Public Library (350 West Georgia Street) and the West End Community Centre (870 Denman Street) will open at 11 p.m. on both nights.

      The VPL site will close each morning at 7 a.m. and the West End Community Centre warming facility will send people back into the streets at 6 a.m.

      The warming centres are being opened by the city in partnership with the provincial government.

      There are no warming centres opening on the West Side of Vancouver tonight and tomorrow.
