Fewer than 5,000 B.C. Hydro customers will spend another night without power

It's going to be another night in the dark for thousands of B.C. Hydro customers living on the Southern Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island.

That's because crews are still trying to restore service to hard-hit areas in the wake of a brutal windstorm last week.

B.C. Hydro's latest data, released at 10:15 p.m. on Boxing Day, indicates that the power is off for 3,484 customers on parts of Galiano, Salt Spring, Pender, Mayne, and Saturna, as well as in North Cowichan and Duncan on southern Vancouver Island.

On Northern Vancouver Island, another 1,122 customers have no electricity in Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Qualicum Beach and Ucluelet.

This means that more than 99 percent of those affected by the storm have their power back.

"Over 30 crews will be working on Galiano, Pender, Saltspring and Saturna Islands on Thursday," B.C. Hydro stated on its website. "As we wrap up restoration work on Vancouver Island, we will continue to send additional crews to the Gulf Islands.

"Due to the extent of the damage, it will take several more days to restore power to all customers."
