High risk of avalanche closes Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden

Heavy snow has halted traffic on one of B.C.'s major highways.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has closed Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden with no detour.

It's because a severe winter storm has elevated the risk of an avalanche.

This section of the Trans Canada Highway will remain out of service until 8 p.m.

The ministry has also shut down Highway 1 at Kicking Horse Canyon east of Golden for the same reason.

And Highway 3 will not have any vehicles travelling from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Kootenay Pass.

The ministry says there will be a detour from Nelson to Creston along Highway 3A and the Kootenay Lake ferry.
