Police have launched an investigation after what appears to be a senseless crime in an idyllic West Side location.

According to the park board, eight conifers were "intentionally vandalized" at Spanish Banks.

They are in a group of trees at the foot of Tolmie Street.

“Trees are for the enjoyment of everyone and we are dismayed by this thoughtless, intentional damage to our urban forest,” park board chair Stuart Mackinnon said in a news release. “We ask that anyone with information on the incident to please come forward.”

The area received its name because the first European contact involved Spaniards Juan Carrasco and José María Narváez in 1791.
