Tensions between China and Canada are likely to escalate in the wake of a court ruling involving a B.C. man.

Robert Lloyd Schellenberg has been sentenced to death in China for his involvement in a methamphetamine smuggling operation.

In November, the former Abbotsford resident received a 15-year term in jail, but prosecutors launched an appeal after a Chinese tech executive was arrested in Vancouver.

Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou is out on bail and living in her Dunbar home as she awaits the outcome of a B.C. Supreme Court hearing to have her extradited to the United States.

Schellenberg's death sentence was delivered in the northern Chinese city of Dalian. He has an opportunity to appeal the ruling.

China gave Canada four days' notice that Schellenberg's case was being appealed.
