The president of the United States has repeatedly claimed that special counsel Robert Mueller is engaged in a witch hunt.

But these statements were contradicted today by Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general.

In a Senate confirmation hearing, William Barr said he didn't believe that Mueller would be involved in a witch hunt.

Barr also said that Trump has given no indication that he will meddle in decision-making.

"President Trump has sought no assurances, promises, or commitments from me of any kind, either express or implied, and I have not given him any, other than that I would run the department with professionalism and integrity," Barr said.

Moreover, Barr said that he felt that his predecessor, Jeff Sessions, "probably did the right thing" by recusing himself from any involvement with the Mueller probe because Sessions had worked on the Trump campaign.

Barr also said that he has a "very high opinion" of outgoing deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, whose office oversees the Mueller probe.
