Most Canadians have never heard of the Justice Democrats

It's a U.S. political action committee that's trying to reform the Democratic Party by nominating candidates who won't take money from corporate lobbyists or corporate political action committees.

"Many of these people don't have a lot of campaign experience, and so in addition to endorsing candidates, Justice Democrats can help nascent campaigns get off the ground with the resources they need," the group states on its website. "These resources include a distributed field program in which candidates can opt-in to get access to an auto-dialer for voter contact, a texting tool for event turnout, a volunteer portal, and other general help on their field program."

The most famous Justice Democrat elected to Congress in 2018 was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Bronx-born Democratic Socialist who's calling for a Green New Deal to tackle climate change.

A self-described Democratic Socialist, Ocasio-Cortez, 29, is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

She was recently profiled on 60 Minutes, and on that program she declared that President Donald Trump is a racist.

According to the Justice Democrats, Ocasio-Cortez's first speech in Congress was the most-watched video in the history of C-Span. It broadcasts gavel-to-gavel proceedings of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The short speech highlighted the plight of an immigrant from Yemen who wasn't being paid because of the U.S. government shutdown—and then Ocasio-Cortez linked this to an attack on democracy by the president.

Yesterday, Ocasio-Cortez delivered a fiery speech about justice at the Women's March in New York City.
