A man charged with an assault upon a woman in her West End apartment building two months ago has been identified as a federal offender who had failed to return to his halfway house in Vancouver.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on November 17, 2018, a woman reported that a man had followed her into her apartment building on Bute Street near Pendrell Street and he attacked her before he fled.

With the help of images from security footage and tips from the public, investigators identified a suspect who was arrested the following day.

Tyler Emerson Gagnon, a 35-year-old resident of Vancouver, has been charged with sexual assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement, robbery, and uttering threats.

A Canada-wide warrant had been issued for Gagnon after he went missing from a Vancouver halfway house on November 16, a day before the assault.

He was arrested on November 18 near West 4th Avenue and Vine Street in Kitsilano when Vancouver police officers spotted him.

He had been on parole for a five-year and nine-month sentence for robbery, assault, breaking and entering, possession of stolen property, mischief, theft of a motor vehicle, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Vancouver police had released this image from security footage of a suspect in relation to an assault on November 17 in the West End.
