Many were counting out the former NDP MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith after a poll came out this week showing her more than eight percentage points behind in a crucial by-election.

But after the votes were counted, Sheila Malcolmson had triumphed over B.C. Liberal candidate Tony Harris in Nanaimo.

It will give the NDP 41 seats in the 87-seat B.C. legislature.

With the support of three B.C. Greens on confidence and supply bills, it ensures the NDP's John Horgan will remain premier.

Coming in third place was Michele Ney of the B.C. Greens.

She's the daughter of long-time Nanaimo mayor Frank Ney, who was a Social Credit MLA from 1969 to 1972.
