Vancouver Canucks sign college free agent Josh Teves

In the shadow of one of the more anticipated Vancouver Canucks defensive prospects in history being called up to the big club, the team added another left-handed rearguard.

No, Josh Teves doesn’t project to have the offensive abilities of Quinn Hughes, who the Canucks selected with the seventh overall pick in last summer’s draft. But Teves, the college free agent out of Princeton, figures to be able to hold his own.

Teves is a 24-year-old from Calgary who was invited to Canucks camp at the start of the campaign. He put up 20 points in 30 games with Princeton this season, by far the best total among the team’s defencemen. A year earlier, he had 33 points in 31 games and set the single-season record for assists by a rearguard in his junior season.

Taves is a prototypical late bloomer who didn’t play in the BCHL (where he was with the Merritt Centennials) until 2014-15. He committed to Princeton at 19, which is later than most college prospects.  He started his rookie season off slow but began dominating the college circuit as a sophomore.

Though the Canucks blueline (and the rest of the roster) is very crowded right now, it seems like Teves will get some time with the Canucks. Because of rules surrounding his status, he becomes a restricted free agent on July 1, when the Canucks will likely sign him to a longer deal.

He’s not eligible to play in Utica this season but he’ll almost definitely see time with the Comets next year.

Finally, a Teves in the NHL whose name is actually spelt like it sounds. Jokes, apparently it's pronounced Teh-Vis. This world.
