Coquitlam RCMP have clarified and released further details about a tragic vehicle collision that took place in Coquitlam yesterday.

Around 2:49 p.m. on March 25, Coquitlam RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle collision at the intersection of Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent.

The initial RCMP news release on March 25 stated it was a three-vehicle collision. However, investigators since learned that the third vehicle was not involved in the collision.

A grey Dodge Charger was heading south on Mariner Way and was attempting to turn left on to Riverview Crescent as a black BMW was driving north on Mariner Way. The two vehicles collided, and the impact caused the BMW to spin on to the raised traffic island where five children were standing: three girls aged 10, 13, and 17, and two boys, aged 6 and 11.

Two of the children—the 6-year-old boy and the 13-year-old girl—were taken to hospital with serious injuries. However, the girl died of her injuries after arriving at the hospital.

The initial RCMP news release had stated that one victim died of injuries while two others had been hospitalized.

B.C. Coroners Service is also investigating.

Both drivers are cooperating with police, and impairment and distraction don’t appear to be contributing factors to this collision, according to investigators.

Although roadways in the area were closed for investigation, they were reopened around 11:55 p.m. last night.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video of the scene is asked to contact Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550.

Coquitlam RCMP will be holding a press conference about the collision today and the Georgia Straight will update this article with any additional details.

The collision occurred one day before another fatal collision took place in Metro Vancouver. Today (March 26), a single-vehicle collision in South Surrey resulted in the deaths of the three occupants in the vehicle, according to Surrey RCMP.
