Surrey RCMP arrest 17-year-old male with loaded handgun near shelter

      A male teenager was arrested on the Easter long weekend in Surrey after he was found to be carrying a loaded gun.

      Surrey RCMP announced today (April 23) that just before 7 p.m. on April 21, RCMP received a call from staff at a local shelter in the 10600 block of 135A Street in Surrey. The caller reported a verbal dispute and suspicious activity outside the shelter, and warned that one of the individuals might have been in possession of a firearm.

      After officers located the suspect in Whalley Athletic Park and pursued him on foot, a 17-year-old male was arrested. He was found to have a loaded 9mm handgun.

      He was taken into custody and is facing several charges including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
