It's been a difficult day for people wanting to make a ferry trip from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.

Earlier this afternoon, B.C. Ferries revealed that the Spirit of British Columbia sustained damage due to adverse weather conditions.

The vessel is in the Tsawwassen dock until further notice as engineers assess the siutation.

Meanwhile, the Spirit of Vancouver Island is running 120 minutes behind schedule between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

"The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us," B.C. Ferries said in a statement. "We don’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly, as we know customers rely on us to get to their destinations. We will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so."

This morning just before 11 a.m., Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning of "strong northwest winds" reaching 80 kilometres per hour through the Strait of Georgia.

These conditions are expected to settle down by evening.

Service between Swartz Bay and the Southern Gulf Ilsnads is about 28 minutes behind schedule.
