An investigation into a vehicle fire in British Columbia’s Southern Interior has resulted in a grim discovery.

Around 8:40 a.m. on April 30, Oliver RCMP received a call to a rural road east of Oliver where a recently burned Ford pickup was located.

The fire department had already extinguished the vehicle fire by the time police arrived at the remote location, according to an B.C. RCMP news release.

During an inspection of the burnt vehicle, human remains were located amid the debris.

However, the individual has not been identified yet.

In addition, due to the extensive damage from the fire, the model and type of vehicle has not been confirmed. Initial indicators suggest that the vehicle may have been stolen from Penticton.

Oliver RCMP are working with the RCMP South East major crime unit, the B.C. Coroner Service, and forensic investigators, who are trying to determine the cause of the fire and the identity of the deceased individual.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact local police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
