Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is reopening all of its campuses today after evacuating and closing them down yesterday due to a threat.

Surrey RCMP stated in a news release that just after 9 a.m. on May 8, they had received an “unsubstantiated threat” involving KPU, although no particular campus or specific individuals were named.

As of 11:30 a.m., all classes were cancelled and all buildings were closed as all five of its campuses—located in Surrey, Richmond, and Langley—were evacuated.

Surrey RCMP, Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services, the Explosives Devices Unit, and Metro Vancouver Transit Police conducted searches.

At 6:30 p.m. on May 8, KPU announced that RCMP had confirmed that there is no threat to public safety and that all campuses would reopen today (May 9) with classes resuming as scheduled.

Surrey RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident and anyone who has information about it is asked to contact Surrey RCMP or Crimestoppers.

In a separate case, Langara College had evacuated its campus on April 1 after fires had been set in its Science and Technology Building, or T Building. Langara reopened its T Building on May 6 after repairs due to damage from an arson incident on April 1. Vancouver police arrested 23-year-old student Nasradin Abdusamad Ali of Surrey on the same day in connection with the incident.
