Strong earthquake strikes off east coast of Kyushu in Japan

      A strong offshore earthquake has hit near the eastern coast of Japan’s southwestern most main island of Kyushu.

      The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 8:48 a.m. on May 10 local time (3:48 p.m. on May 9 B.C. time).

      The epicenter, at a depth of 23 kilometres (14 miles), was located 39 kilometres (24 miles) southeast of Miyazaki and 47 kilometres (29 miles) northeast of Nichinan.

      There are no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami warning has not been issued, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
