A young pair of siblings are home safe and sound after a cold night spent on a mountain in Coquitlam.

The seven-year-old boy and six-year-old girl were located in a forested area of Burke Mountain at around 8:30 a.m. this morning (May 20).

The children were hiking with their father the day before when all three fell down a steep hill and landed in a creek.

According to Coquitlam RCMP, the father deemed the climb up would be too difficult for the kids. He made it himself and returned with a search-and-rescue crew.

"We don't have a complete medical assessment on them, but the initial indications are that they are cold and maybe [have] minor injuries but there does not seem to be any serious injuries at this time," Coquitlam Search and Rescue manager Ian MacDonald told CBC News.

An RCMP release provides additional details.

“The father was able to make the difficult climb up the cliff while injured to get help,” it reads. “Three SAR Team's (Coquitlam, North Shore, Maple Ridge) actively searched to locate the kids. Assets on site to help include, helicopter, drone and Police Dog.

“The kids have been located and are currently being long line by helicopter to awaiting ambulances.”
