Emergency crews shut down Pacific Street between Jervis and Bute streets as they battled a blaze at a West End apartment building late this afternoon (June 2).

Around 5 p.m., fire crews responded to a fire at the 23-storey Pacific Surf Apartments located at 1275 Pacific Street, which was upgraded to a three-alarm fire, according to Vancouver Fire Chief Darrell Reid.

Smoke, which initially appeared whitish-grey but quickly turned black, began billowing from the corner suite, with flames rising out of the open sliding doors and windows.

According to Reid, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the 15th floor.

      There were no injuries.
