Michelle Eliot and Jason Pires to host ‘Proudly Philippines’ fair at Vancouver’s Robson Square

      Two Vancouver broadcasters of Filipino lineage will be lending their star power at a Philippine food and travel fair.

      Michelle Eliot of CBC and Jason Pires of CTV will host the opening program of the “Proudly Philippines” Food and Travel Fair on Saturday (June 15). The event starts 10 a.m.

      The Philippines-born Eliot is the host of CBC Radio One’s BC Today, an open line show.

      Pires is a co-anchor of CTV Morning Live in Vancouver. His mother is a Filipina. His parents met in the Philippines.

      “Proudly Philippines” is presented by the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver.

      “Proudly Philippines is organized by the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver in celebration of the 121st anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, the 70th year of PH-CA relations and the declaration for the very first time of the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month. The event, which will be held at the Robson Square on June 15, 2019 from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm, will highlight everything Filipino, from Philippine food products and cuisine to tour packages to travel destinations in the Philippines, and other Filipino businesses in Vancouver, as well as cultural performances. Through our Proudly Philippines showcase, we hope our visitors get to experience a little bit of the Philippines in Vancouver.

      Have a taste of Filipino cuisine from participating Filipino restaurants -- Plato Filipino, Kulinarya, Aling Mary's Bakeshop and Goldilocks, and try the various Philippine products already available in Canada through our major Canadian importers, Corinthian Distributors, AFOD Ltd., Seasia Foods Ltd., and Rumtels Solution Inc., and Philippine exporters Mama Sita, Paradise Fruits Corporation, Loobi Canada Inc and Mega Global Corporation.

      The Consulate is also proud to present various Vancouver-based enterprises owned by Filipino-Canadians, such as Kape, Kasama Chocolates, La Glace, Flipside, and Bukobaba Essentials Inc., and Filipino franchises, Max and Potato Corner.

      Explore tour packages to the Philippines from participating travel agencies, New Millennium Holidays, Tourmasters Travel, Sampaguita Travel, Maligaya Travel, and A. Mary's Travel & Tours, as well as Philippine Airlines, and visit the Philippine Department of Tourism booth and enjoy taking pictures with El Nido Lagoon as the background.

      In addition to food and travel, there will be exhibits by a group of Fil-Canadian artists and a photography display of Philippine festivals by Allan Florendo at the event. WeavIna also joins the exhibit with their mat-woven products.

      Visitors will be treated to performances throughout the day, with cultural dance numbers from La Riva Dance Studio, BIBAK, Zambales Dance Group, MASSKARA, and Ifugao Dance Group while the musical entertainment will be provided by Salve and Ed Dayao, Janice Lozano, Marie Carlos, Marife Elsted and her band, and Kimwell and Grace del Rosario of Rosario Strings and visiting violinists from the Manila Symphony Orchestra. There will also be kali and arnis demonstrations by the Maelstrom Martial Arts and the Maharlika Institute for Arnis and Filipino Martial Arts, respectively, and performances by the students of Tabletutors DJ Academy.

      Sammie Jo Rumbaua of the Power of Threee will host the day's program. Tabletutors DJ Academy will provide the sound system. Both establishments are proudly Filipino-Canadian owned.
