A celebrated Vancouver gin and spirits maker may have a new spot for its copper still.

Long Table Distillery is likely relocating from 1451 Hornby Street to one of two commercial buildings under construction at the north end of the Granville Street Bridge.

The buildings are part of the Vancouver House residential development by Westbank Projects Corp., which is a 52-storey residential tower famous for its twisty design.

City planners have endorsed Westbank’s rezoning application to amend the development bylaw for one of the commercial buildings in order to allow brewing or distilling as a permitted use.

“The operation would produce small batches of spirits and focus around a tasting room,” planner Karen Hoese wrote in a report to council.

The rezoning application for the site at 1426 Granville Street has been referred by council to a future public hearing.

Hoese stated in her report that although brewing and distilling are classified as manufacturing use, the “scale and nature of the proposed distillery is considered compatible with the neighbourhood commercial character called for under the Granville Bridge”.

“Under liquor licensing rules, the tasting room would operate at fewer hours than other licensed establishments, such as closing at 11 pm on weekend nights,” Hoese wrote.

The site is a triangular lot bordered by Granville Street to the west, Pacific Street to the north, and Rolston Street to the east.

A similar triangular parcel is located across Granville Street. Both have been approved by the city for two six-storey commercial buildings.

The proposed distillery will have a floor area of 3,440 square feet.

Long Table Distillery has won several awards, including first place in the gin category of the 2016 Vancouver International Spirits Competition.

A distillery space is proposed at one of the two commercial buildings that form part of the twisty Vancouver House tower project.
