It's been 27 years since a Vancouver Canuck has been named as the NHL's rookie of the year.

Tonight, Elias Pettersson pulled off this feat after a brilliant season in which he scored 28 goals and posted 38 assists.

The 20-year-old Swede led the team in scoring on his way to winning the Calder Trophy.

The last Canuck to do this was the Russian Rocket, Pavel Bure, who scored 34 goals and posted 26 assists in his rookie year in 1991-92.

This year's Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player went to Nikita Kucherov, who potted 41 goals and 87 assists with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

That set a record for a Russian-born player in the NHL, beating former Canuck Alexander Mogilny's record of 127 when he played with the Buffalo Sabres in 1992-93.

Kucherov also won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer and the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player as judged by fellow hockey players.

Pittsburgh Penguin Sidney Crosby was second in the voting for the Hart Trophy, followed by Edmonton Oiler Connor McDavid.

Calgary Flames defenceman Mark Giordano won the Norris Trophy as the league's top blueliner over Brent Burns and Victor Hedman.
