Update (June 24): Surrey RCMP stated that they discovered that the noise was a result of fireworks, not gunfire. A number of individuals were initially detained during the investigation.

A residential area in the Cloverdale area has been evacuated as Surrey RCMP are at the scene of a shooting.

Around 9:10 a.m. today (June 24), Surrey RCMP received a report of shots fired at a residence in the 19400 block of 71A Avenue.

Officers have attempted to speak with occupants at the residence and two individuals are in custody but additional individuals are believed to be within the house.

RCMP and the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team have set up a perimeter, and the surrounding neighbourhood has been evacuated.

Traffic has been diverted away from the area, 195th Street was closed in both directions, and police are asking residents to avoid the area.

Anyone with further information about this situation is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
