Updated: 29-year-old sex offender who disappeared from Vancouver halfway house has been arrested

      Update (July 8): The Vancouver Police Department announced today that officers spotted Jonathan Cardinal in the Downtown Eastside and arrested him. He remains in custody. 

      A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a federal high-risk sex offender didn’t return to his halfway house in Vancouver yesterday.

      After two violent sexual assaults in 2010, Jonathan Cardinal, who is 29 years old, had been serving a longterm supervisory order and was under several conditions, including a curfew.

      Cardinal is described as an Indigenous male who is 173 centimetres (five-feet, eight-inches) tall and weighs 75 kilograms (165 pounds).

      He has short brown hair, brown eyes, and a tattoo on his upper back.

      He had last been seen wearing a blue t-shirt, white sneakers, black-rimmed glasses, and a backpack.

      Anyone who sees Cardinal or knows of his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
