One day after a suspicious death took place in the West End, Vancouver police have arrested a suspect and released further details about the incident.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) stated in a news release today (September 12) that after 8 p.m. on September 10, an altercation took place at 1125 Pendrell Street.

When officers arrived, they found a man who was suffering from life-threatening injuries. After he was taken to hospital, he later died from those injuries.

While police had been previously withholding the victim’s name as they notified next of kin, the VPD identified him today as 29-year-old Kyle Vincent Gabriel.

On the evening of September 11, as officers were arresting a 23-year-old male suspect near Pendrell and Thurlow streets, police alleged that he attempted to injure a police dog and assaulted a police officer. His identity has not been released.

Charges of assaulting a police officer and assaulting a police service dog are being recommended to Crown counsel.

While the homicide investigation remains ongoing, no charges have been laid yet.

The death is the city’s seventh homicide of the year.

Anyone with information is asked to call VPD detectives at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
